Why You Should Visit Liberty, Missouri
Liberty, MO, a suburb northeast of Kansas City, has a surprisingly rich history. Settlers arrived in the area in 1819 and the town was incorporated in 1829. It is the one of the oldest towns west of the Mississippi River. Located on the Missouri River, Liberty was a landing spot for early settlers and traders.
The Liberty Jail once famously held Joseph Smith (founder of Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints) as prisoner. The jail has been partially reconstructed and now has a visitor’s center. You can read more about Joseph Smith being incarcerated in Liberty here.
In 1913, the Interurban Rail system connected Liberty to Kansas City. Since then, transportation links have only increased, further expanding the growth of Liberty.
William Jewell College is located in Liberty and is one of the oldest private colleges in the state. During the civil war, Jewell Hall was used by the Union Army as a hospital and burial site.
Today William Jewell College offers over forty academic majors and ten pre-professional programs. Windward’s President and Wealth Manager, Drew Osborne, is a graduate of William Jewell College.
Historic Downtown Liberty offers all kinds of shopping and dining amongst beautiful, historic buildings. There are many local eateries, coffee shops, and boutiques to check out. This Saturday they are doing a Foodie Tour of Downtown Liberty for $10.
Proceeds go to the Wilkerson Food Pantry. Every Saturday (May-September) there is a Farmers’ Market at Liberty Square featuring produce, flowers, meats, baked goods, etc. There are also many parks, biking, and hiking trails in the area to explore.
The Belvoir Winery and Inn is another one of many reasons to take a trip to Liberty. An exceptional venue in the former Old Fellows Home offers free wine tasting, beautiful views, and historic features and artifacts.
The Odd Fellows Home District has unique, historic architecture. It’s also reportedly haunted!
